David Afonso showcases research at IASS 2024 in Zurich

This past August, David Afonso, one of our innovative researchers at the Gaudí World Foundation, presented his groundbreaking project at the IASS 2024 Symposium, held in Zurich, Switzerland, from August 25 to August 30, 2024. Joining over 500 researchers from around the world, David had the opportunity to showcase how Gaudí’s architectural principles continue to inspire modern structural design.

The Polyfuniculator: bridging the physical and digital worlds

David’s project, the Polyfuniculator, brings together the physical and digital realms of structural design. By using suspended ball chains, photogrammetry, and motion capture, the Polyfuniculator allows for dynamic, real-time exploration of funicular structures – models that naturally adapt to forces and find equilibrium. This innovative tool provides a fresh perspective on structural efficiency, balance, and design, qualities that deeply resonate with Gaudí’s architectural philosophy.

The project not only reflects David’s ingenuity but also aligns with Gaudí’s vision of integrating natural forms with structural innovation, making it a perfect representation of the Foundation’s commitment to pushing boundaries in architecture.

IASS 2024: a platform for Global Collaboration

The IASS 2024 Symposium brought together over 500 researchers, architects, and engineers from across the globe. Some of the keynote speakers included John Ochsendorf, Anupama Kundoo, and Laurent Ney, who shared insights on structural innovation and sustainability in architecture. David’s participation, alongside these industry leaders, showcased how modern technology can transform age-old architectural concepts into innovative solutions for today’s challenges.

As part of a larger global network of researchers, David’s participation in this event showcases the Gaudí World Foundation’s dedication to promoting research that not only preserves Gaudí’s legacy but also drives sustainable, forward-thinking design. David’s work with the Polyfuniculator is just one of many examples of how the Foundation continues to innovate and inspire in the fields of architecture and design worldwide. We are proud to support researchers like David, whose commitment to innovation and creativity keeps Gaudí’s legacy alive in the 21st century.
